Abstract

While innovation is widely seen as a key to competitive advantage, managers and researchers have tended to focus on R&D as the source of innovation. However, this R&D-based perspective neglects the possibility of informal deliberate learning and innovation outside of organized R&D, i.e., innovation from non-R&D work in an organization. We discuss the meaning of non-R&D innovation and how it is related to similar concepts. We then review the empirical literature and find non-R&D innovation is more common than perceived and can be cultivated by managerial choices about technology, training and trust-based culture. We conclude by outlining a research agenda on non-R&D innovation to better understand the innovation process.
