Measuring innovation

Abstract

Building upon definitions provided in another chapter, the objective here is to address issues relating to measurement of the various aspects of innovation, widely defined, and to some extent discuss data sources. The main indicators considered are: research and development (R&D) spending; counts of intellectual property rights; innovation surveys; patterns of technological diffusion; and other, alternative, indicators such as product launch data, changes in product prices, balanced scorecards and measures of innovation impacts.
