Localized technological change

Abstract

We trace back the origin of the notion of localized technological change to Atkinson and Stiglitz (1969) and Stiglitz (1987). Then, we succinctly sketch the economic theory and implications of such a notion of localized technological change in detail through the work of Acemoglu, Antonelli, and others. Finally, we provide attention to the small rather recent literature that has provided an operational definition of this notion of localized technological change and its implications using nonparametric production frontier estimations rooted in activity analysis. We summarize this small empirical literature and sketch some avenues for future work.
