Digitalization technologies: the evolution of smart networks

Abstract

Among the few technologies uncontroversially characterized as ‘general purpose technologies’ (GPTs) are included not only the steam engine and electricity, but also information and communication technologies (ICTs). Whereas the first digital revolution generated a GPT based on the innovations of microprocessors and digital computers, the second digital revolution saw the evolution of a GPT of networked computers based on all-IP broadband communication networks. The upcoming generation of mobile technology (5G) can be considered yet another GPT. Due to the convergence of fixed and mobile networks, application-blind, QoS-differentiated, all-IP broadband capacities underpin the pervasiveness of 5G as crucial dimension for application-driven virtual networks. 5G is spawning downstream innovations not only for communication and entertainment, but also for a large variety of IoT applications, thereby becoming an essential driver for future dynamics in smart network industries.
