Abstract

The recent decades have witnessed a rapid growth of China’s sciences research. Policies for research evaluation and incentivisation are core to such developments. This chapter unpacks the changing policies and practices of research evaluation in China. It reviews important policy shifts in research evaluation in China since the early 2000s, provides an overview of major forms of research evaluation. The chapter concludes with key debates about research evaluation in China: the internationalisation and endogenisation of research, tensions between quality and quantity, debates about equality and justice, movements towards academic integrity, and tensions between policy and practice.
