Quality of life in large-scale, big-city urban environments: a world perspective

Abstract

The growth of cities and their hinterlands is well-documented and continues throughout the world. Advantages and disadvantages of large-scale urban living have been extensively reported, often supported by empirical evidence, including social indicators and data from quality of life (QOL) studies. The concept of social indicators and the measurement of subjective well-being are widely used to assess QOL. Four big city, large-scale metropolitan area case studies designed to measure quality of life are discussed- the Detroit region, metropolitan Istanbul, Brisbane-South East Queensland, and Hong Kong. Using social surveys, the studies were intended to produce measurable indicators that may be tracked over time and used to inform public policy. The chapter discusses the status of these longitudinal intentions in each locale.
