Abstract

The concept of development is a complicated one and requires putting it in the right context and identifying all relevant elements that affect the development process. This chapter begins with a detailed review of the world in which the development process takes place. Then it proceeds with a review of various approaches to and definitions of development and raises the question of development for whom. The role and place of individual and interaction between individual and society are discussed to understand their role in the development process. The role of institutions in the development process is also briefly discussed in this chapter. To put the local and regional development in the right context then the chapter focuses on the definition and understanding of space, territory, and region as well as the concept of uneven local and regional development, and possible causes and consequences.
