Riding the wave: resilient Polish migrant entrepreneurs navigating Brexit and COVID-19 in the UK

Abstract

This chapter evaluates how Polish entrepreneurs in the UK reacted first to Brexit and then to the COVID-19 crisis. We explored the resilience of Polish migrant entrepreneurs by analysing three in-depth case studies on the first and the second migrant generation. Based on our findings and an extensive literature review, we argue that transnationality, i.e., being embedded in multi-scalar settings, can be an asset in times of crisis for migrant entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs can tap into additional resources and generate, receive, assess, and disseminate knowledge and information. For some, this also might be the start of additional business activities. Moreover, migrant entrepreneurs take advantage of transnational opportunity structures and networks to respond to changes in forms of capital.
