Abstract

The study of the location of production (spatial economics; economic geography) has a long history. In spite of general interest, there is no wide consensus in the literature about the factors that influence the location of new businesses. The chapter surveys basic theories of location of domestic firms and supports considerations with numerous examples. It also looks outside the economic box and tries to find lessons from physics that could be useful in economic analysis. Chance events play also an important part in the spatial location of economic activity.
