Questioning sustainability in Latin America

In: Handbook on Growth and Sustainability

Abstract

The issues pertinent to climate change, environmental degradation and sustainability, have a global reach, however, the discourse surrounding it does not. There is a particular cultural and linguistic divide among the discourse of English-speaking environmentalists, scholars and activists and those that are Spanish speaking, residing mostly in Latin America. The purpose of this chapter is to try to bridge this divide, by highlighting the many Latin American writers in this field who are in agreement in points of view of those in the North, but as well, demonstrate salient differences in the appraisal of key issues such as development, sustainability, progress, social justice, resource extraction and climate change.
