Abstract

Este capítulo habla sobre, la interpretación tradicional exagera el grado de inestabilidad existente en el sistema bancario colombiano en el período 1871-1923. En primer lugar, nunca existió un pánico nacional. Los que ocurrieron estaban siempre limitados a una ciudad y, a lo sumo, a su área de influencia. Los casos de quiebra fueron más bien pocos y, en general, en los que se liquidaron (como el Banco López o el Banco Dugand) no hubo pérdidas para los depositantes. En realidad, las fuentes principales de inestabilidad bancaria en el período 1871-1923 fueron exógenas a la banca comercial: las guerras civiles y las emisiones del Banco Nacional.
