Abstract

equipop constructs individualized, or bespoke, spatial contexts around every observation in a georeferenced dataset. Its distinctive feature is that neighbourhood size can be set by accumulated reference population rather than by a fixed number of rows or a common geographical radius: an observation representing 600 people contributes 600 towards a requested k, so the distance needed to reach k varies with local density. The command returns that geographical reach together with contextual population totals and, when requested, group counts and shares. Several population thresholds and fixed radii may be evaluated in one call. Optional distance decay supports negative-exponential, exponential-normal, exponential-square-root, log-normal and power families, with a common bandwidth or one that varies across observations. Further options control grid resolution, treatment of the origin cell, allocation of population at the neighbourhood boundary and coordinate projection.
