Abstract

lodes downloads and processes the U.S. Census Bureau's Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD) Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) data within Stata, replicating the analyses available through the Census Bureau's OnTheMap web tool (https://onthemap.ces.census.gov/). The command supports the three LODES dataset types -- OD (origin-destination), WAC (workplace area characteristics), and RAC (residence area characteristics) -- for any U.S. state and any year currently published in LODES8, including selection by job type, age cohort, earnings group, and industry sector. Three analysis subcommands mirror those of OnTheMap: destination analyzes where workers residing in (or working in) a given area commute to (or from); inflow_outflow reports counts of workers living and/or working in an area, broken into in-area and out-of-area; and area_profile summarizes the job composition of an area. Built-in U.S. Census geographies are supported (block group, tract, ZCTA, place, county, CBSA, state), as is any user-supplied custom polygon provided as an ESRI zipped shapefile. Downloaded data are returned as Stata frames and can optionally be saved as .dta, .xlsx, or frame-collection (.dtas) files.
