Unter Verschluss: Eine Geschichte des Suizids in der DDR 1952–1990

Abstract

Kaum eine Todesursache gibt so viel Aufschluss über das Wohl einer Gesellschaft wie der Suizid. In der DDR wurden vergleichbare und valide Suizidzahlen systematisch erhoben, aber strengstens geheim gehalten: Die seit Mitte der 1970er-Jahre als »Vertrauliche Verschlusssache« eingestuften Statistiken waren nur einer sehr kleinen Gruppe zugänglich. Ellen von den Driesch hat diese verloren geglaubten Daten wiederentdeckt und in umfangreichen Recherchen eine völlig neue Datenbasis geschaffen. Erstmals erlaubt dieses bisher unveröffentlichte Material eine systematische Analyse der Veränderungen der Suizidraten in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik. Das Buch, das das Suizidgeschehen in der DDR in historische und sozialwissenschaftliche Bezüge einbettet, verfolgt dabei mehrere Ziele: Es sensibilisiert für die Thematik der soziologischen Suizidforschung und schafft einen Informationsgewinn hinsichtlich der Suizidmortalität in der DDR über Raum und Zeit hinweg.
