68th Euroconstruct Conference. European Construction: Down in 2009 – Recovery From 2011 Onwards. Country Report

Abstract

2009 has been the worst year for the construction market in the Euroconstruct area for more than ten years. Construction output fell by 8.4 percent. For next year, we expect another, albeit smaller, decline by 2.2 percent. A recovery will likely not be seen until 2011. Developments are expected to vary strongly from country to country. With the exception of Switzerland (+3.3 percent) and Poland (+5.3 percent), all other countries experienced shrinking production. The greatest declines in construction output were reported in Spain (–21.5 percent) and Ireland (–32.2 percent). Ireland is also the country which has been hit hardest by the recession (GDP –7.3 percent in 2009). Within the construction sectors, civil engineering is the only market segment which has not declined in 2009. The Euroconstruct Country Report provides detailed information about the construction market development in the 19 Euroconstruct member countries based on a comparable harmonised dataset for the major construction sectors including the macroeconomic framework.
