Abstract

In the 19 countries in the Euroconstruct network construction output is expected to decline sharply in 2009. Output is forecasted to fall by 8.4 percent and a further reduction is very likely in 2010 (–2.2 percent). A gradual recovery is expected in 2011 (+1.6 percent), starting from the civil engineering and the housing sectors. The market in Western Europe is in a very weak position. The volume of construction output in the 15 Western European countries is expected to contract by 8.9 percent in 2009 and a further 2.7 percent 2010, following an estimated decline of 3.5 percent in 2008. In the four Eastern European countries which are covered by Euroconstruct construction output is forecasted to grow slightly by 0.7 percent in 2009, but only because of the high weight and positive development in Poland (+5.3 percent). The other Eastern European countries are declining in construction output. The Euroconstruct Summary Report contains macroeconomic analysis and an overview of the European construction industry by sectors (housing, non-residential construction and civil engineering). The Summary Report includes also most of the speeches of the 68th Euroconstruct conference in Zurich.
