Abstract

Mit dem Akronym "Laser" – Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (Lichtverstärkung durch stimulierte Emission von Strahlung) – bezeichnet man eine Technologie, welche die Grundlage zahlreicher Verfahren für industrielle Fertigung, Materialbearbeitung, Mess- und Nachrichtentechnik bildet. Als es in den frühen sechziger Jahren erstmals gelang, Laserquellen zu realisieren, beschränkte sich ihr Einsatz auf wenige vorwiegend wissenschaftliche Anwendungen. Optische Technologien im Allgemeinen und Lasertechnik im Besonderen galten in der Folge einerseits als wissenschaftsbasiert – d. h. als Ergebnis primär wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse – andererseits als Technologien mit eng beschränktem Anwendungspotential.
