Abstract

Ensuring that everyone benefits from economic development is a crucial policy objective. As economies advance to middle-income status and strive for greater prosperity, inclusion must become a central concern. Persistent and wide socioeconomic gaps disrupt social harmony, undermine democracy, and ultimately compromise economic progress. Pursuing Inclusive Economic Development in Asia presents 13 chapters that explore diverse aspects of inclusive economic growth. The discussions investigate the role of globalization and foreign direct investment, evaluate the impact of public policies, and offer case studies from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Viet Nam, along with broader regional analyses. Researchers and policymakers will find insights, lessons, and cautionary tales related to inclusion and economic growth in the region. This book commemorates the life and legacy of Peter McCawley—former dean of the Asian Development Bank Institute, executive director at the Asian Development Bank, and fellow of the Australian National University—who dedicated his career to working on these important issues.
