Abstract
Apitourism is considered one of the most sustainable forms of travel, which involves learning about bees, beekeeping, and their important role in preserving biodiversity, while also promoting local tourism through aspects such as local food and connection with nature. This paper, using a case study approach, examines the dual facets of apitourism in Canadian landscapes—economic opportunities and environmental challenges. With the growing interest in sustainable tourism, apitourism has emerged as a niche sector that promotes honeybee conservation while providing economic benefits to local communities. The integration of apiculture into tourism not only supports biodiversity and ecosystem services but also stimulates local economies through job creation and increased revenue. However, this burgeoning sector faces significant environmental challenges, including habitat degradation and climate change, which could threaten bee populations and, by extension, the apitourism model. This study aims to highlight the need for balanced approaches that foster economic growth while ensuring environmental stewardship. Recommendations for sustainable practices within the apitourism sector will be discussed, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders to mitigate adverse environmental impacts and promote long-term sustainability in Canada's diverse beekeeping landscapes.
