Abstract

En este trabajo, ponemos a prueba la hipótesis de que la dinámica macroeconómica de las economías de América del Sur en los últimos dos décadas, está básicamente determinada por el contexto internacional prevaleciente en ese periodo. Nuestro principal indicador del contexto internacional es la disponibilidad y el costo del financiamiento externo. Nuestra muestra incluye a los seis países más grandes de América del Sur y nuestro periodo de estudio es el de 1980 – 1999. Esta periodización permite tratar con dos contextos externos marcadamente distintos para América del Sur: desfavorable en los ochenta, por la salida neta de capitales de la región, y ampliamente favorable en los noventa, hasta antes de la crisis asiática, por el ingreso neto de capitales.
