Abstract

El mundo de la agricultura para Centroamérica y la República Dominicana está cambiando radicalmente y ello se ha convertido en motivo de atención para los encargados de las políticas públicas. Entre los nuevos retos se encuentran el reciente acuerdo comercial RD-CAFTA concertado con Estados Unidos, el surgimiento de nuevos mercados de productos de alto valor y calidad, modificaciones estructurales profundas en las cadenas de valor y en las ventas minoristas de alimentos a través de la expansión de los supermercados, efectos acelerados del cambio climático, una escasez de agua cada vez mayor y el empobrecimiento del suelo. Estas transformaciones provocan tanto la necesidad de adaptarse a fin de evitar consecuencias nefastas, como la oportunidad de aprovechar nuevas fuentes de crecimiento para la agricultura centroamericana. El ejercicio de reflexión que propone este libro consiste en examinar las oportunidades y las limitaciones propias del crecimiento del sector en la región.
