2011 Welthunger-Index: Herausforderung Hunger: Wie steigende und stark schwankende Nahrungsmittelpreise den Hunger verschärfen

Abstract

Der Welthunger-Index 2011 zeigt, dass sich die globale Hungersituation seit 1990 geringfügig verbessert hat. Dennoch ist das Ausmaß des Hungers weltweit weiterhin „ernst“. Auf regionaler und nationaler Ebene sind die WHI-Werte sehr unterschiedlich. Die höchsten Werte und damit den größten Hunger verzeichnen Südasien und Afrika südlich der Sahara. Südasien senkte seinen WHI-Wert zwischen 1990 und 1996 erheblich, konnte diese schnellen Erfolge dann jedoch nicht fortsetzen. In Afrika südlich der Sahara wurden nach 1990 zunächst weniger Fortschritte als in Südasien erzielt, seit der Jahrtausendwende holt die Region jedoch auf. Nach den nun vorliegenden Berechnungen konnten 15 Länder ihre WHI-Werte im Vergleich zu 1990 um 50 Prozent oder mehr reduzieren. Insgesamt 19 Ländern gelang es, aus den beiden niedrigsten Kategorien –„sehr ernst“ und „gravierend“ – aufzusteigen. Äthiopien, Angola, Bangladesch, Mosambik, Nicaragua, Niger und Vietnam erzielten zwischen dem WHI von 1990 und dem von 2011 die größten absoluten Fortschritte.
