Abstract

Para la Universidad Externado de Colombia es un orgullo poder entregar a los investigadores e interesados en el desarrollo de la cultura nacional, una nueva edición de la Revista Contemporánea de Baldomero Sanín Cano, Max Grillo y Ricardo Hinestrosa Daza. En sus días, 1904 y 1905 la Contemporánea asumió la difusión de las corrientes literarias y científicas que provenían tanto de Europa como de la América española y portuguesa. Sus páginas divulgaron las vanguardias estéticas procedentes de Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania e Italia, y, junto a ellas, acogieron con empeño las manifestaciones más conspicuas del “modernismo” de habla castellana. Contra los disecados guardianes del idioma aposentados en las academias de la lengua de España y de sus antiguas colonias, los directores de la Revista lucharon por un idioma libre, dinámico y en plena evolución. Propendían por un castellano actual, presente y activo, en una palabra, por una lengua y un pensamiento contemporáneos.
