Abstract

Durante el siglo XIX en Colombia y otros países hispanoamericanos la expansión de las formas de sociabilidad estuvo íntimamente relacionada con las disputas por el control hegemónico del espacio público. Los principales agentes de las prácticas asociativas fueron las elites liberales, la Iglesia católica con sus aliados conservadores y los sectores populares liderados por grupos de artesanos. Esos agentes imprimieron un matiz político-religioso en el conflicto por la definición del Estado-nación. Este libro, versión parcial de una tesis de doctorado que recibió la mención summa cum laude en 2006, es un examen exhaustivo de la evolución de las principales formas de sociabilidad desde los inicios republicanos (1820) hasta la instauración del proyecto de república católica, mejor conocido como la Regeneración (1886).
