    Hoy en día existen muy pocas barreras que actúan ante el comercio internacional y ante los flujos financieros, y en un medio donde los hechos financieros de importancia impactan de inmediato en el mundo entero las finanzas tienden a ser internacionales. Debido a esto existen una serie de problemas que afrontan las compañías, a nivel nacional e internacional. Así mismo existen algunos problemas especiales que surgen de las relaciones económicas entre las naciones. Muchos de estos problemas se deben al uso de diferentes monedas en distintos países y a la necesidad de intercambiarlas. El tipo de cambio entre las monedas es el monto de una moneda que se recibe a cambio de otra. Los tipos de cambio se establecen mediante cierto número de convenios y tanto los tipos de cambio como los convenios en sí mismos están sujetos a cambios. Las variaciones de los tipos de cambio entre las distintas monedas pueden tener efectos muy profundos en las ventas, en los costos, en las utilidades y en el bienestar individual.
