Abstract

This study examines the role of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and natural gas in Asia’s evolving energy transition, focusing on macro-level demand and supply dynamics, their contribution to national energy mixes, and implications for energy security and decarbonisation. It analyses trends in low-carbon measures across the LNG and natural gas value chain, including methane abatement efforts, and assesses the continued need for upstream investment to ensure a stable and adequate supply to Asian markets. The study also evaluates recent policy developments in the United States related to LNG and natural gas and their potential impacts on Asian LNG markets, particularly in terms of supply availability, price volatility, and long-term contracting. Based on these analyses, the study proposes policy measures and recommendations to enhance LNG market stability in ASEAN and the wider Asian region. These measures aim to mitigate price fluctuations, improve supply–demand balance, and support the orderly development of LNG markets while contributing to broader economic stability during the energy transition.
