Abstract

This document sets out to review statistical information on security and criminal justice in Latin America and the Caribbean. It thus contributes to the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, to “promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels”. Its use will contribute to the creation of reliable, technical, precise, independent, relevant, timely and comparable records that conform to international standards. According to the United Nations, this information will improve transparency, access to information and empirical data for designing, monitoring and evaluating policies and programmes that prevent crime and strengthen the rule of law and criminal justice.
