Abstract

Este artículo ofrece algunas reflexiones sobre el envejecimiento y las ciudades, es decir, aborda la interrogante sobre la manera en que viven las personas mayores en los centros urbanos, y los desafíos que enfrentan en este locus. Esta reflexión no quita mérito a la necesidad de análisis y de medidas específicas que beneficien la calidad de vida de las personas mayores que residen en áreas rurales o no urbanas, las que por cierto merecen una atención cuidadosa. Sin embargo, este artículo se concentra en un fenómeno que viene constatándose a nivel global, y particularmente en América Latina y el Caribe: el envejecimiento y la urbanización de la población son dos tendencias globales que, juntas, constituyen fuerzas importantes que caracterizan al siglo XXI.
