Abstract

Este livro apresenta um método pioneiro de classificação e descrição das unidades domésticas do século XIX mineiro para a demografia histórica em toda a sua complexidade. O autor considera a existência de quatro tipos de família: a escravista, a camponesa, a autônoma e a assalariada, além de tantas outras formas híbridas. A descrição minuciosa desses tipos, baseada em suas características demográficas e econômicas, permite avançar de forma interativa no conhecimento da evolução populacional da Província de Minas Gerais, considerada uma das mais dinâmicas do Império.
