Abstract

This study evaluates the effect of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles on the growth and yield of okra. Two varieties, Clemson Spineless and Star of David, were treated with MgO nanoparticles at concentrations of 20ppm, 40ppm, 60ppm, 80ppm, and 1ppm, alongside salt and NPK fertilizer as controls. The results indicate that 100ppm MgO nanoparticles significantly improved plant height (2.32 ± 4.12 cm), number of leaves (7.80 ± 3.50), and number of branches (7.60 ± 2.80) compared to other treatments. However, salt application showed a higher plant height (21.52 ± 3.92 cm). growth and yield data revealed that 100ppm MgO improved flower number (2.4 ± .7) while 20ppm enhanced early days to flowering (38.70 ± 4.22). Yield parameters showed that 80ppm MgO nanoparticles increased pod weight (16.10 ± 5.44 g) and the number of pods per plant (5.50 ± 9.34). Despite positive growth impacts, MgO nanoparticles exhibited an inhibitory effect on total seed weight. Overall, MgO nanoparticles demonstrated potential as a growth enhancer in okra cultivation, with optimal concentrations needed for maximizing benefits.
