Abstract

Political, economic, social and media power of sport has opened the door to intelligence activities. Due to the lack of similar research in the field of sport, the study had two aims: to review espionage cases in sport and to identify areas for business intelligence application in sport, from both business and sports perspectives. Scientific and professional articles and authoritative media materials in English were gathered. Unlike illegal espionage cases involving eavesdropping, recording, hacking, or theft, business intelligence as a legal method provides a new dimension to the sports ecosystem and enables sports organizations, federations and clubs to gain comparative advantage. The paper identifies two interlinked levels of business intelligence applicability in sport: for achieving business results and for achieving sports results.
