Abstract

The comparative advantage of a business entity in today’s economy is defined by the intellectual capital it possesses. The basic aim of this research was to investigate and prove the interdependence between management quality and achieving business excellence. Emphasis is placed on the level of professional qualifications and the adequacy of management education in state and county port administrations. Interviews and surveys were used to examine directors and governing council chairmen in 6 state port authorities and 22 county port authorities. The results show that state port authorities lead county port authorities in the relevance of management qualifications and that appropriate vocational training resulting in relevant knowledge and skills can enhance port authority performance, regardless of the gender of management personnel.
