Abstract

This research article seeks to evaluate and analyzethe efficiency of the Ecuadorian manufacturing industry inthe period 2007-2018 considering intra-industry classifications.Pavitt Taxonomy Sub-sectors classification (1984) and Diaz's classification are used to analyze the performance of companiesfrom two different perspectives. A non-parametric DEA modeloriented to outputs with variable returns to scale is used. Data is obtained from the Superintendencia de Compañías,Valores y Seguros (SCVS). The results obtained show that both Pavitt's and Diaz's classifications have efficient subsectors related to other manufacturing industries. The subsectors related tomachinery and metal production are efficient throughout thestudy period according to Pavitt's and Diaz's classification. We also identify that the subsectors that are dominated by suppliers, which include the most traditional manufacturing companiesand the subsector of specialized suppliers are the most efficient. While the science-based sector that comprises the production allied with research that may come from academia, has low levels of efficiency. This suggests the need for innovation through the promotion of research and development in manufacturing industries or the cooperation of the academy with the productive sector.,
