Abstract

The present study investigates whether the lackof insurance hinders theaccess to public health services in Ecuador, even though the uninsured are covered by the Ministry of Public Health. Likewise, it seeks to identify if there are other factors that threaten the equity of access to the health system. In this line, we employa cross-sectional analysis using logistic regression models with data from the National Survey of Health, Reproductive Health and Nutrition 2012, applying Andersen's theoretical model of demand for health services. The results show that there is a negative relationship between having no health insurance and the probability of using ambulatory care and hospitalization services. Moreover, need factors show a strong association with the use of these services which is desirablewithina public health system.
