Abstract

Infrared-chemiluminescence spectra ofCO2molecules formed by steady-stateCOoxidation onPd(111),Pd(110),Pd(100)and polycrystalline-Pdsurfaces have been measured to get information on the surface reaction dynamics. In all cases, the productCO2was vibrationally and rotationally excited. TheCO2molecules desorbed fromPd(100)andPd(111), which have flat surfaces, were vibrationally more excited than those fromPd(110)(stepped surface) and polycrystallinePd. These results show that the dynamics ofCOoxidation onPdsurfaces are structure-sensitive, i.e. the structure of the activatedCO2complex depends on the surface structures of the reaction sites. Furthermore, the activities of steady-stateCOoxidation as a function of surface temperature were different among thesePdsurfaces, which indicates that theCOoxidation onPdis also structure-sensitive in the kinetics.
