Abstract

Hydroxyapatite powders with Ca/P ratios of 1.67 and 1.5 were processed by ceramic methods and studied during sintering using X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopic methods, paying particular attention to the structural and surface morphology formations of the ceramics during sintering. For stoichiometric samples sintering starts at 1000°C through the formation of a quasihexagonal grain configuration. This morphology is conserved after the decomposition processes of hydroxyapatite in the range of 1200–1450°C. For calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite, sintering starts at temperatures close to 800°C through the formation of a fibrous structure. After reaching 1450°C these samples are composed of tricalcium phosphate, thus conserving the fibrous morphology, which resembles biological hard tissue.
