INTERFACIAL REACTION AND SURFACE STRUCTURES OF THEPb/Si(113)SYSTEM

Abstract

In the present work thePb/Si(113)system has been studied with LEED, AES, EELS, and QKLEED calculations. The interface is very reactive rather than abrupt as previously concluded. As a result, a specific intermixed phase, which is very similar to that in thePb/SiandPb/Gesystems studied earlier, forms at the interface even at room temperature. The atomic structure of the1×1Pbsurface of the intermixed phase has been determined with QKLEED and there is one orderedPbatom in each unit cell. Primary results indicate thatPbatoms are likely to randomly occupy the interstitial sites in the intermixed phase.
