Abstract

We present a synchrotron radiation study of the electronic and magnetic properties of bulk Mn and ultrasmall Mn particles supported on graphite substrates. The Mn was deposited by thermal evaporation under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The average particle size was determined from measurements of the (soft) X-ray reflectivity as a function of photon energy. Short-range magnetic order (SRMO) in the Mn samples was monitored with spin-polarised photoelectron diffraction (SPPED). An increase, relative to bulk Mn, in the peak asymmetry of the Mn 3p photoemission spectra for the Mn particles indicates either an increased density of states near the Fermi level or a less efficient screening of the core hole by the valence electrons.
