Abstract

The Au(110) surface has a(2×1)missing row reconstruction. Its temperature phase diagram is investigated by a Monte Carlo simulation. The comparison of MC calculations with equilibrium data shows that attractive interactions are very likely to be between steps of opposite sign. By depositing, at low temperature, 1/2 Au monolayer a new metastable(1×1)phase can be formed. The kinetics of the(2×1)ordering upon annealing is found to be slow and necessitates interlayer mass transport as shown by step formation. By depositing 1 Au monolayer, a mostly(2×1)disordered surface is created. Upon annealing the ordering process requires no step formation and occurs at a lower temperature.
