Passive control methods for cavitating flow control: A large eddy simulation study

Abstract

Biomimicry presents a promising approach for enhancing the performance of marine vehicles. By considering the skin structure of high-speed fish, it is possible to develop biomimetic designs that effectively control cavitation. This study uses large eddy simulation (LES) methodology to develop novel concepts for cavitation control and performance enhancement inspired by the biomimetic fish scale structure. The analysis examines several key factors, such as the vapor area covering the hydrofoil surface, pressure distribution and vorticity magnitude distributions. The results indicate that implementing biomimetic fish scales reduces the cavitating zone, defined as the area covered by vapor on the hydrofoil surface and contributes to lowering flow fluctuations, thereby enhancing the stability and efficiency of the hydrofoil. Furthermore, this study examines the impact of wall contact angle (CA) on cavitation phenomena. It finds that a wall CA of 80∘ reduces the cavitation bubbles more effectively compared to the angles of 0∘ and 160∘.
