Abstract

Starting from an applied research study on behalf of British Rail, this article then describes how multi-sector trend analysis can help to anticipate change in any industry and in searching for paradigms to assist in looking "outside the box" of one's own sector's progress in R&D. It points to the importance of choosing sectors with longer and steeper learning curves, suggests how to identify such sectors, and the degree to which cross-sector lessons may be applicable. It describes certain general trends in R&D, and an implication of the increasing speed in disseminating ideas, especially with the growth of the Internet.
