The Dynamics of Chaebol-Government Relations in South Korea’s Economy

Abstract

The relationship between the government and chaebols is often considered key for South Korea’s post-war economic success. However, the political and financial liberalisation since the 1980s has reduced the state’s absolute control of the economy. Its greater market liberalisation and outward investment since the 1990s has further tightened the link between the economy and the outside world. Korea’s more globalised economy made the pro-business policies beneficial only for chaebols’ expansion, instead of promoting economic growth.
