Abstract
Unless transformative, adult leadership appears on both sides of the Israeli–Palestinian divide, the relationship between two peoples living on a sliver of land between the Mediterranean Sea and Jordan River will continue to be one of occupier and occupied. Recent events may force historians to conclude that the only chance for a different outcome expired in the spring of 2001, when the parties failed to implement the recommendations of the Sharm el‐Sheikh fact‐finding report they claimed to respect and welcome. I served as Chief of Staff of the Sharm el‐Sheikh Fact Finding Committee and offer my observations in this commentary.
