Impacts of Coffee Certification on Households' Livelihoods in Vietnam

Abstract

Certified coffee is a significant strategy to enhance the global value of the coffee industry. In Vietnam, certified coffee has been produced since 2002. This study aims to assess the impact of coffee certification on the livelihoods of coffee farming households in Vietnam. To achieve this, the study utilized data from 171 household interviews, 4 focus group discussions, and 5 in‐depth interviews conducted in Gia Lai province, Vietnam. The findings indicate that coffee certification has positively influenced both human and resource capital of coffee households. Additionally, coffee certification has had a notable effect on household income. During the first 2 years of transition to certified coffee, no significant income difference was observed between certified and noncertified coffee households. However, from the third year onwards, the income of certified coffee households was significantly higher than that of noncertified coffee households.
