Permafrost in china: Past and present

Abstract

Permafrost regions occupy some 2,150,000 km2 or 22.4% of the territory of China. The distribution characteristics are closely related to variations in climatic conditions. The permafrost area has changed since the Late Pleistocene. In north‐eastern China, the southern limit of permafrost extended to latitude 41‐42.N during the coldest stage of the Last Glaciation; in the Holocene Megathermal the southern limit retreated northwards. But the ice‐wedges and permafrost that formed in the Late Pleistocene are still present in the northern part of Mt Da‐Hingganling. The finding of inactive ice‐wedges at Yitulihe indicates a colder climate and an enlargement of permafrost during the Late Holocene. With these climate changes, the lower limit of high‐altitude permafrost in the alpine and plateau regions of western China moved up 800‐1000 m, but most of the high mountains and plateaux still remain periglacial. Le pergélisol couvre environ 2.150.000 km2 ou 22,4% de la Chine. La distribution géographique du pergélisol est en relation étroite avec les variations climatiques. Son extension s'est modifiée depuis la fin du Pléistocène. Dans le N‐E de la Chine, la limite méridionale du pergélisol s'est étendue jusqu'à une latitude N de 41‐42° pendant la phase la plus froide de la dernière glaciation. Au cours de l'hypsithermal holocène, la limite méridionale s'est retirée vers le nord: toutefois, les coins de glace et le pergélisol qui s'étaient formés à la fin du Pléistocène, sont toujours présents dans la partie septentrionale du Mont Da Hingganling. La découverte de coins de glace inactifs à Yitulihe indique l'existence d'un climat plus froid et une extension plus grande du pergélisol à l'Holocène. Avec ces changements climatiques, la limite inférieure du pergélisol de haute altitude dans les régions alpines et les plateaux de l'ouest de la Chine s'est élevée de 800‐1.000 m, mais la majorité des hautes montagnes et des plateaux restent toujours dans un environnement périglaciaire.
