Active patterned ground and cryoturbation on Muckish mountain, Co. Donegal, Ireland

Abstract

Active stony earth circles occur on the less coarse cells of relict sorted nets developed in quartzite debris above 600m ASL on Muckish Mountain, north‐west Ireland. The earth circles are underlain by deformed and truncated podzolic soil horizons that resemble cryoturbations produced by differential frost heave of adjacent sediments. Grain‐size distributions indicate that the soils are frost‐susceptible and possess negative frost‐susceptibility gradients. This infrequent association of coarse quartzite debris and fine‐grained frost‐susceptible matrix probably arises from the weathering of thin inter‐bedded pelites (schists) within the quartzite. Recent activity may have been triggered by climatic deterioration during the Little Ice Age, although present climate on Muckish appears capable of maintaining the surface morphology of the stony earth circles. These features, along with forms described previously, suggest that most if not all upland areas in Ireland above 600‐700m ASL possess climatic conditions favouring frost‐related soil processes. Des ostioles et des petits cercles de pierres actifs existent, au‐dessus de 600m, au sommet du mont Muckish (Irlande du nord‐ouest). Ces gélistructures se sont développées à partir des cellules les moins grossières de sols polygonaux fossiles, que dessinent en surface des fragments de quartzite. Elles sont associées à la cryoturbation des horizons tronqués d'un podzol sous‐jacent. La superposition de fragments de quartzites et d'horizons relativement fins, responsable d'un gradient de gélivité négatif, semble avoir été propice à des phénomènes de gonflement cryogénique différentiel. Les éléments fins proviennent probablement de la météorisation de lits schisteux compris dans les quartzites locaux. L'activité des gélistructures peut avoir été déclenchée par les détériorations climatiques qui ont accompagné le Petit Age Glaciaire, mais se trouve entretenue par les conditions qui règnent actuellement au sommet du mont Muckish. Les ostioles et cercles de pierres présents à cet endroit, ainsi que quelques cas de formes comparables reconnus par ailleurs, suggèrent l'existence d'un étage caractérisé par des processus périglaciaires actifs dans les montagnes d'Irlande audessus de 600‐700 m.
