Coding the transportation problem

Abstract

A new “pivotal” technique for systematizing the Dantzig method is explained. The technique has been found useful in simplifying coding and in reducing iteration time on a digital computer. The first use of the technique was in a novel program aimed at problems for which the number of destinations is many times greater than the number of sources. The nature of the program is explained, and performance data are given for a number of computations.
