Geoscientific Maps For Planning

Abstract

This article discusses a newly emerging cartographic technique of presenting diversified geoscientific information in a form that planners can easily understand and use. Maps of environmental potential originated in the Federal Republic of Germany and have been used for planning purposes. Included are the background and rationale of such mapping, a description of the methods used, and discussion of the interface between geoscience and planning that has to be taken into account when preparing this type of map. The authors conclude that such maps are valuable tools for those involved in planning, especially in the developing countries.
