Abstract

Over the past 35 years, employment in Austria grew at a slower pace than the EU average. Massive shifts in employment occurred away from shrinking and towards expanding sectors, and new jobs were created primarily in the public sector. Annual working hours declined precipitously over the period, to just below the EU average at present. In 1999, the annual volume of labour was 12 to 15 percent below the 1964 level, even though real net output more than doubled over the period. Labour productivity is slightly above the EU average, but 5 to 10 percent lower than in the USA.
