Abstract

Liberalization of the telecommunications market is considered an important step in the creation of an information society; liberalization is also a precondition for exploiting the potential of new jobs in the information sector. On a global basis, telecommunications operators and equipment manufacturers have reduced employment; the only employment gains were recorded in the service sector. In Austria the starting position is relatively favorable, however, as employment losses in PTA, the incumbent monopoly, will be slight, and providers in the mobile communications sector and cable TV companies are likely to create a considerable number of new jobs.
